About

Sophia on the web was created by Jennifer Leslie Torgerson for her philosophy students and includes syllabi, lecture notes, reviews, philosophy links, a site bibilography, a discussion forum and a glossary.

Philosophy is the love (philo) of wisdom (sophia).

γνῶθι σεαυτόν
::know thyself::

Jennifer is the facilitator of the discussion, or the host.  The forum is meant to be a place for others to philosophically debate important issues of the day.

The forum does not represent her opinions.  The aim is to present both sides of each issue fairly.  Each topic issue will include:

  • ISSUE statement
  • FACTS (background & important terminology)
  • PRO (for)
  • CON (against)

Philosophical Issues will be divided into four main categories, and a new post in a different category (and/ or a new topic within each category) will appear each month.

The categories are (alphabetically):

Axiology:  (What should be valued?) Political and Social Philosophy, Legal Theory, Morality, Ethics, Bio-Ethics, Aesthetics, Philosophy of Art, Philosophy of Music.

Epistemology:  (How do we know?) Truth, Philosophy of Mind, Cognition, Cognitive Science, Philosophy of Language, Content, Universals.

Logic:  (What is correct reasoning?) Logical Issues, Form, Philosophy of Mathematics.

Metaphysics:  (What is real?) Matter, Philosophy of Science, Cosmology, Ontology, Time & Space, Physics, Philosophy of Religion.

To be published monthly, each new post will discuss philosophical topics of interest, that are relevant to current events.  The site may develop into a forum for students, but anyone is welcome to comment.
